Claude Cunningham, age 87, of Middletown, OH, passed on Monday, March 2, 2026, at Hospice of Butler and Warren Counties. He was born in Bristol, TN, on January 13, 1939, to the late Major Cunningham and Nellie (France) Hawkins.
Claude worked in the slab yard for Armco Steel Corp/AK Steel and retired after 30 years of service. A true original, Claude lived life entirely on his own terms. He was tough as steel, a natural risk‑taker with a generous heart, and a spirit that refused to be anything but authentic. He often said, “Drive the car like you stole it,” and that was exactly how he approached life—boldly and fearlessly.
Claude had a lifelong love of animals and fed every creature that wandered into his yard. His beloved cat, Smokey, was never far from his side. He also had a deep passion for cars. A self‑taught master of bodywork and painting, Claude became well‑known for his exceptional craftsmanship and the pride he put into every job.
In his later years, Claude faced a long and courageous battle with end-stage kidney disease. He met that struggle with remarkable tenacity—quiet strength, grit, and the same determination that defined his entire life. During that time, he embraced his faith and belief in Jesus, finding comfort and peace in his unwavering trust in the Lord.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Mary Hamilton, James (Jimmy) Cunningham, Roy Hawkins, Irene Hawkins, and Amos Hawkins.
Claude is survived by his daughter Peggy (Tim) Parks of Lewisburg, OH; grandchildren Chance Parks, Alyshia Shafer, and David Parks; and great‑granddaughter Ella Sue Shafer. He is also survived by special friends who were like family: Linda Smith and Mike Offill.
